Not a Plumber

I am so not a plumber! I just spent the last 2.5 hours trying to replace the whole flush system in our toilet that broke this last weekend. I bought the minimal replacement set to fix the problem and ended up breaking another piece while I was at it. The nylon threaded nuts were on too tight so I had to hack those off. I bought a full flush system which leaves basically the original tank. I installed everything per the instructions, got it all reassembled and turned the water on to find the seal doesn't. Nope, it's not sealing and the water just drips out the bottom. No matter how many times I adjusted, took apart, re-adjusted the seals and threaded nuts, the things still leaks. I inspected the seal and it looks to be defective but I can't be sure. However, I can say that after spending that much time on the silly thing that it may have been just as easy to have bought a full tank rather than the parts (and I still may end up doing just that). I'm definitely not a plumber.
